Have you reached the end of your MAP session and tried to think of a good reflection question? One that allowed the students to really show their Math thinking? Well – thanks to quite a few teachers – we now have a tool. They are not the only questions you could ask but they do provide a starting point.  Click on the link and let’s get started!

PS – If you find you cannot read the questions, click on the bottom of the page where the titles: Communicating and Reasoning, Understanding and Solving, Connecting and Reflecting, Reasoning and Analyzing are.  That will take you to a page where eyes like mine can see the questions!

Whenever I meet with any group of teachers and the word “game” is mentioned every single teacher has their favourite math games. We often end up exchanging the names and rules and sometimes even playing those games.  A year ago or so I came across a series of books called Well Played. They were set up in grade bands so you knew the games would be appropriate for your students. What I liked the most about the books was the teaching that went with each game. Not only would you get the games, their rules and the game-boards, you would also know what it might would look like in a classroom, along with tips from the classroom, what to look for mathematically variations of the game, and you would be given ideas about exit tickets for the game as well as extensions for the game.  These turned the games into more than a time filling device but into valid math learning for your class. I wholeheartedly recommend these books to you.

Psst – if you look into the MAP templates folder you will find samples of games from the books.  They are games from around Grade 3 to Grade 10 but they don’t include the rest of the ‘gold’ from the books.

MAP – School District 60 Numeracy Initiative

School district staff have been working over the 2017-2018 school year to examine a sustainable numeracy initiative that will support teachers and students in School District 60. Based on feedback from teachers, principals, school and district assessments, we have developed a math assessment & practice tool to support teachers and students in numeracy instruction and learning. We are pleased to announce, with support of the Board of Education, SD60 will undertake a new Math Assessment & Practice (MAP) Initiative starting next year.

The establishment of the MAP initiative will span one to three years. We expect the MAP to become a sustainable classroom tool to support numeracy for years to come. The MAP will provide teachers with a quick numeracy assessment that demonstrates level of understanding and provides teachers feedback for their instructional practice. Inservice training and resources will support teachers with a friendly assessment tool that can be used frequently with students to support teaching and learning.

The MAP Initiative will:

  • Support teachers with their instructional practice
  • Expand teacher understanding and comfort with new numeracy curriculum
  • Provide an accessible tool for student practice
  • Provide teachers with “What next?” teaching strategies guided by assessment results
  • Include Inservice Training for teachers in Grades 4-10
  • Provide Collaborative opportunities around numeracy
  • Support schools with purchasing numeracy resources including manipulatives
  • Provide an excellent Number Sense teaching tool
  • Have future resources available at www.prn.bc.ca/math/

We’d like to thank everyone, including local and provincial partners, that have been involved in this exciting new endeavour and we look forward to working with our schools and teachers. More details will be shared in the Fall of 2018.

Jarrod Bell – Director of Instruction
Charmaine Chretien – District Principal Curriculum & Assessment
