Recommended Resources for Parents

Please feel free to share these sites with parents. Most do not involve a great deal of materials and most have stepped up for this worrisome time. Keep well out there and remember “This too will pass.”

Math for Love

This site supports parents and kids by exploring mathematical ideas through games.  A ‘short list’ of a number of math games is provided; this includes pencil and paper games, card games, games involving special decks, board games, puzzle games, and other resources.

Math Before Bed (or anytime!)

This link leads to a collection of prompts that can inspire mathematical discussions that families can have before bed, at dinner or anytime.  Each prompt shows children a problem that may or may not have more than one answer. The purpose of each question is to generate a discussion about HOW the answer was determined.

Youcubed At Home

This website includes many activities that focus on visual math and growth mindset.  During this time they are offering activities that students could do at home ranging in age as well as a range of materials.  This site also includes a free student course for parents/guardians and kids to do together.

Numeracy in Peace River North

This site is maintained by the district’s numeracy support teachers.  During this time there will be activities posted for students to do at home with minimal materials.

Prodigy

A free game platform that encourages students to solve problems as they cast spells and journey through a make believe land.  The game is for Grades 1 – 8 but students complete a placement assessment at the beginning (students don’t know this) and then given appropriate levels of math afterwards. Highly engaging game and good math.
