Have you reached the end of your MAP session and tried to think of a good reflection question? One that allowed the students to really show their Math thinking? Well – thanks to quite a few teachers – we now have a tool. They are not the only questions you could ask but they do provide a starting point.  Click on the link and let’s get started!

PS – If you find you cannot read the questions, click on the bottom of the page where the titles: Communicating and Reasoning, Understanding and Solving, Connecting and Reflecting, Reasoning and Analyzing are.  That will take you to a page where eyes like mine can see the questions!

Math for Love

This site supports parents and kids by exploring mathematical ideas through games.  A ‘short list’ of a number of math games is provided; this includes pencil and paper games, card games, games involving special decks, board games, puzzle games, and other resources.

Math Before Bed (or anytime!)

This link leads to a collection of prompts that can inspire mathematical discussions that families can have before bed, at dinner or anytime.  Each prompt shows children a problem that may or may not have more than one answer. The purpose of each question is to generate a discussion about HOW the answer was determined.

Youcubed At Home

This website includes many activities that focus on visual math and growth mindset.  During this time they are offering activities that students could do at home ranging in age as well as a range of materials.  This site also includes a free student course for parents/guardians and kids to do together.

Numeracy in Peace River North

This site is maintained by the district’s numeracy support teachers.  During this time there will be activities posted for students to do at home with minimal materials.

Prodigy

A free game platform that encourages students to solve problems as they cast spells and journey through a make believe land.  The game is for Grades 1 – 8 but students complete a placement assessment at the beginning (students don’t know this) and then given appropriate levels of math afterwards. Highly engaging game and good math.

As I have been perusing the myriad of possible resources that would be of use to you in your planning I have come across the Surrey Numeracy Support site. They have collected up all the sites that may be of use to you (many on this site also) as well as tasks in three grade bands: K-2, 3-6 and 6,7. They also offer links to other districts and their menu’s of support including videos.

So curated BC resources in one place!!

Let me reiterate their warning – “The list can be overwhelming. Once you find one or two you like, use them awhile before exploring more.”

Keep well out there, slowly one step at a time.

While I was working through my emails and such, I came across work done by a Math Resource teacher named Fawn Nguyen. She is a person I respect and she had done an incredible amount of work putting together 4 weeks of learning at nine levels – PreK-K to Grade 9. She uses many of the same sources that I share freely and promote to teachers as solid mathematical resources. Keep in mind that she is in California so the grade levels will not correspond to ours. I usually look a grade or two lower on American sites. That being said, it is an excellent resource that I wanted to share with you all.

Here is the link to the resource. Please use it and let me know what you think.

Keep well out there.
